Forgiveness

What is forgiveness?

In the Compton's bible dictionary it states that forgiveness is a giving up of resentment or claim on an offence committed. In some circles it is also called the remission of sins. Putting it simply, in the case of yourself its forgiving everyone that has ever done any wrong to you, even if it is only saying the wrong thing. And in being forgiven yourself by God for everything you have ever done wrong right down to the small words that you have said to hurt someone. He forgives EVERYTHING.
I found this quote in a sermon on the internet and felt that it said more about forgiveness than many others I have read: "To forgive is to turn the key, and let the prisoner out. To forgive is to write in large letters across a debt "nothing owed." To forgive is to pound the gavel in a courtroom and say "not guilty." To forgive is to loose the moorings of a ship and release it to the open sea. To forgive is to grant a full pardon to a condemned criminal. To forgive is to relax a strangle hold on a wrestling opponent and give him his life. To forgive is to smash a clay pot into a thousand pieces so that it can never be put together again. This matter of forgiveness is very important and it's right at the very crux of your spiritual health and mine" . (sermon central) Within the workings of forgiveness are true repentance and the willingness to make an atonement for what you have done wrong. And the effect of forgiveness is a restoration of the relationship which the two persons involved before had is restored. So when we ask forgiveness from God for the sins we have committed we return with him to the state we were before we committed the sin.
